European Union proposes ethical guidelines for AI
The European Union (EU) has presented draft ethics guidelines for artificial intelligence. The guidelines are developed by a group of industry experts, the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence.
The guidelines set out how developers and users can make sure AI respects fundamental human rights, applicable regulation and core principles, and how the technology can be made technically robust and reliable.
The independent group of more than fifty experts from academia, business and civil society have worked with the industry forum European AI Alliance to develop the proposed guidelines.
The guidelines are open for public comment before becoming final. The draft is open for comments until 18 January. In March 2019, the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence will present the final guidelines to the European Commission.
The EU aims to take its ethical approach to the global stage and has invited other countries to adopt the guidelines as well.
